Nafplio

details >>

The first capital of Modern Greece, and perhaps one of its most beautiful cities.
Old Town
The castel Palamidi dominates the town of NafplioNafplio is best know for its old town which has retained its character thanks to strict town planning regulations.

The town is dominated by the magnificent Palamidi castle which looks down over the bay and is reached by climbing a gruelling 999 steps.

The less adventurous can get there by car, but either way don't miss it, it is one of the most spectacular attractions in Greece!

Following independence from Turkish rule in 1834 the first Greek parliament was established in Nafplio in an old mosque which stands on the edge of constitution square.

Syntagma Square in NafplioThe square houses many cafes and is the centre of activity in Old Nafplio, and a great place to pass the time and watch the world go by.

The narrow streets around the square hide tavernas and boutiques and are lovely to explore as you stroll off to your evening meal.

There are many interesting and unusual shops in Nafplio, including a worry bead museum and several art galleries.

The Bourtzi (Turkish for 'Island Fort') in the harbour was built in the 13th century. It can be reached by boat and offers wonderful views of the town.

Property in the old town is very expensive. There is limited space, and as Nafplio becomes more popular prices continue to rise. Many of the neoclassical houses have been converted into hotels, and on weekends, especially in the summer,  they are all full.
Pronoia
An older suburb of the new town, Pronoia is nestled under the castle, and has a very neighbourly, almost island feel. Only a short walk from the old town, and with sea views from some parts.

It is a quiet area and properties here are much more affordable than the old town. Because of its proximity to Palamidi the architecture is controlled, although not as strictly as in the old town, and buildings can only be built to a height of three floors. This combined with the narrow streets lends Pronoia its unique flavour.

In some parts the roads are too narrow for cars, and some houses can only be reached on foot.
New Town
Nafplio is expanding and the new town is growing.

Not as attractive as the old town, but still very pleasant. There is considerable development going on in and around Nafplio, and so far it shows no signs of slowing.

The 'Kourti' region to the North of the centre on the coast road is considered by many to be the most desirable area of Nafplio. Many of the properties here have views across the bay to old Nafplio and Bourtzi.
